LAKE KERKINI (6 – 7 hours)
Enjoy a unique experience observing migratory birds and magnificent animals.
Excursion to Lake Kerkini, one of the 10 most valuable wetlands in Greece with approximately 300 species of birds and rare animals. Among the many species, admire the beautiful flamingos and the wonderful buffaloes. All this is combined with the magnificent view of Mount Beles and the enchanting valley of Serres.
The beautiful Lake Kerkini is artificial, with a length of 17 km and a width of 5 km, created by the dam of Strymonas around 1930. Lake Kerkini is 35 km from Serres and 80 km from Thessaloniki, which rightfully makes it a particularly attractive choice for a day trip. We would dare to say more attractive than any other area in northern Greece.
Lake Kerkini is included in the 10 internationally significant wetlands of Greece. In the northwestern part of the lake, you will find its beautiful villages and tourist facilities, while its rich fauna predominates in the east. To enjoy the entire magnificent landscape, get on a boat – called “blaves” – and sail on its calm waters to feast your eyes on water lilies, impressive birds (mainly pelicans and herons), which make their stop there during migration seasons.
Kerkini is one of the oldest migration stations for birds in the region. It is the ideal destination for nature lovers – enjoy this full-day trip to get close to rare species of birds and animals!
